Back Porch
When I was on the back porch the other day I thought..."ooh, wouldn't it feel good to take a nap out here." It was beautiful and breezy and I would have loved to be able to lie down in that atmosphere. I remembered then the old bed frame stored under our guest bed. It is one of those antique metal head and foot board frames that is not truly a full size bed (it's slightly smaller and a full size mattress will not fit on it) which makes it almost impossible for me to use. I thought...why not make my own mattress from foam and bolt those pieces together along with a well supported piece of plywood and put a small (probably short, maybe even square) bed on the back porch. I could put lots of pillows on it so it's something between a day bed and a chaise.
There's room for it on one side of the porch but I might end up having to choose between that or a table and chairs...which is probably a bigger priority.
Then I mentioned it to Kris...he was not too keen on the idea of a bed on the back porch.
Oh well...you win some you lose some.
Wasn't that a fun idea though?

I think it's a great idea. If you upholstered it in all-weather fabric it would be a very cool and out of the ordinary napping spot. I'd love it. 
Hammock? Something you could only hang up if you weren't using the table and chairs. The sad reality is that you've got three boys and probably very little time for breezy naps. Sounds lovely, though. Hey, do you mind if I steal that idea? Not right now because I can't put an outside bed where I am now but I could see Travis going for that. We've often talked about having a hammock for outside naps. It's such a fun idea. 
Amy - Absolutely you can steal it. I hope you find the perfect setting for it. I looked online for pictures of something similar and so far the only thing I've found are a couple of daybeds on a porch. I knew I couldn't be the first person to think of it.Tisra - It's not that a hammock hasn't been thought of or mentioned...and I'm not opposed to it, but the bed sounded so much more romantic and comfortable for a breezy afternoon. Yes, breezy naps would be a very rare treat...but what better way to enjoy a treat than on a well cushioned, antique bed with an ample supply of pillows on a shaded back porch? It's my idealism coming out. And sadly...now that I've had the idea and imagined it in color and detail...I doubt I'll ever enjoy a hammock the way I should. I know that goes against all my rules for contentment but I'm a work in progress. :)
as i began to read this entry i was sure that i would drive up tomorrow and there it would be, a bed on the porch! very nice thought! 
Oh my. Oh my. Oh my. That is one of the best ideas I have ever heard. And it would look fabulous in my back yard. Or out in a meadow. Or in a cornfield. Or wherever. And you're so right - a hammock will never do now that I can see the whole thing. It also wouldn't be quite the same if it were a new bed.Sigh. I understand that sickness - the beautiful idealism and inability to settle.
Yes, I see the vision now. How silly of me to recommend an inferior hammock!!!I imagine the dappled sunlight through your wooded back yard, the cool crisp cotton sheets, and the breeze fluffing through your hair. I get images of 1960s movies where the girls slept on screened porches in the summer and rag rolled their hair for bouncy curls the following day. Luxurious sleeping in the semi-outside! Ahhhhh.
Just extend the deck so you can have a table AND the bed! that's a solution.
YES...extend the deck! Now your thinking with my outlandish mind. :)
